Before

Classroom safety training with 18-month certification cycles, high new-hire incident rates, expensive expert mobilization to offshore platforms.

After

60+ VR training scenarios, AR remote expert assistance, and real-time digital twin safety monitoring across all offshore assets.

Offshore oil and gas operations are among the highest-hazard working environments in the world. For a major upstream operator with platforms in the Arabian Gulf, training new field personnel was an 18-month commitment — and incident rates among newly certified personnel in their first year offshore remained dangerously high. Expensive expert mobilization to offshore platforms for inspections, troubleshooting, and knowledge transfer was consuming 35% of the operations budget.

VR Safety Training Library

Diwansoft's immersive engineering team built a library of 60+ VR training scenarios using photorealistic Unity 3D environments built from LiDAR scans of the actual offshore platforms — trainees practice on virtual replicas of the exact equipment they'll encounter in the field:

Emergency Response. Gas leak detection and isolation. Firefighting operations on offshore decks. Evacuation and muster protocols. Man-overboard rescue. These high-consequence scenarios can be repeated safely in VR — a luxury impossible in real operations.

Confined Space Operations. Permit-to-work compliance. Atmospheric monitoring and escape planning. Rescue procedures. Scenarios that were previously impossible to train in realistic conditions.

Equipment Operations. Wellhead control procedures. BOP operation and pressure management. Gas compression startup and shutdown — linked to the actual technical documentation used on the platforms.

Trainees use Meta Quest Pro headsets at onshore training centers. Scenario performance data feeds directly into the competency management system, automatically updating certification records and flagging knowledge gaps for remediation.

AR Remote Expert Assistance

For offshore personnel encountering unfamiliar equipment states, Diwansoft deployed AR remote assistance using HoloLens 2 and Azure Spatial Anchors:

Field technicians stream their first-person view to remote specialists at an operations center. Specialists annotate the physical environment — highlighting the specific component to address, marking measurement points, overlaying reference schematics — with spatial annotations that persist as the technician moves around the equipment.

For routine inspections that previously required flying a specialist to an offshore platform (helicopter mobilization alone costs $8,000–$15,000 per visit), remote AR assistance eliminated 68% of expert mobilization events.

Digital Twin Safety Integration

Digital twins of all 12 offshore platforms feed real-time data into both the AR assistance and VR training platforms:

This integration means field personnel and remote experts share a common operating picture — the same real-time sensor data, the same asset history, the same procedural documentation.

  • Live gas detection sensor readings visible in the remote assistance view
  • Equipment status (pressure, temperature, flow rates) overlaid in AR during inspections
  • Historical maintenance data accessible during field work
  • Permit-to-work status visible in-headset before any high-risk task begins

Results

  • 51% reduction in offshore incidents among VR-trained personnel versus classroom-trained baseline
  • 40% reduction in training time — from 18 months to 11 months to full certification
  • 68% reduction in expert mobilization to offshore platforms
  • $28M annual savings in expert travel costs and incident response
  • 100% competency tracking — all training outcomes linked to the certification management system
  • Regulatory acceptance from the national petroleum authority for VR-based certification pathways
